You walk into a cycling studio for the first time.

You walk into a cycling studio for the first time. It’s loud with students talking over each other in their matching sports bras and leggings. You don’t know where to go and if you can wear your tennis shoes on the bike. You start to sweat and feel your chest tighten up.

Time under tension (TUT) is the total amount of ti

Time under tension (TUT) is the total amount of time that muscles are working during an exercise. Basically, you want to slow your movements wayyyyy down.

You can use this approach to target stimulation of muscle fibers to improve muscle strength and endurance, without having to increase your weights.

An easy example is a bicep curl. You can count to 6 as you curl the weights up, and also count to 6 as you uncurl the movement. (Bonus points if you keep a slight bend in your elbow at the bottom!)

The eccentric part of a bicep curl is the lowering of the curl, so you can make more progress faster by slowing that portion of the movement even more.

It’s still important to use weights that are heavy enough to challenge your muscles to reach the point of fatigue or failure.
