The Importance of Your Quads

If you are on a fitness journey, you have probably heard lots and lots about your “quads,” but why?

The quadriceps femoris, fondly known as the “quads,” is a group of four muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh. It literally translates to four heads, highlighting the INCREDIBLE strength we hold within this muscle group!

The four muscles comprising this group include

  • Rectus femoris
  • Vastus intermedius
  • Vastus lateralis
  • Vastus medialis

These muscles are responsible for flexion at the hip joint (i.e. bringing thigh towards the core) and extension of the knee joints (i.e. lengthening the leg at the knee joint).

Not only are the quads SO MUCH FUN to exercise, but they are extremely important in maintaining mobility and good health!

Strong quads assist in ALL every day activities:

  • Climbing stairs
  • Standing up from a chair
  • Jumping
  • Kicking
  • Walking
  • Balancing
  • And more!

In terms of prevention, strong quads support the integrity of the knee joint which reduces risk of knee injury, pain, and osteoarthritis. Strong quads also are indicative of less complicated surgical recovery from hip and knee surgeries. Having  strong quads may also lessen our risk of falls as we age!

It’s time to appreciate the lovely muscle tension we find when we challenge our quads!
